Off the Shelf: When Night Breaks

Summary:

The competition has come to a disastrous end, and Daron Demarco’s fall from grace is now front page news. But little matters to him beyond Kallia, the contestant he fell for who is now lost to this world and in the hands of a dangerous magician. Daron is willing to do whatever it takes to find her. Even if it means embarking on a dark and treacherous journey, risking more than just his life, with no promise of return.

After awaking in darkness, Kallia has never felt more lost. Especially with Jack by her side, the magician with who has the answers but cannot be trusted. Together, they must navigate a dazzling world where mirrors show memories and illusions shadow every corner, one ruled by a powerful game master who could all too easily destroy the world she left behind — and the boy she can’t seem to forget. With time running out, Kallia must embrace her role in a darker destiny, or lose everyone she loves, forever.

—–<>—–

A world full of uncertainties and fickle magic that can change at any moment. Trust is a memory and love is questionable. In When Night Breaks, Janella Angeles brings you into a world full of second guesses and false realities. What you see may not be what you get, and promise broken when you least expect it.

I was eager to learn more about Kallia, Demarco, and Jack. The way they were entwined within each other’s stories led for a captivated audience waiting to see what the results would be. While some areas of the book may have been slow, or drew away from the main plot, as a whole the story was intriguing as the world continued to emerge even more than in the first book. Black and white merged into gray, and the unexpected results of magic and its cost brought about results even characters had no desire for.

And, of course, I had to enjoy my love for morally gray characters. Jack was one who was full of so many mysteries from the beginning, and it was hard to distinguish if he and others were trustworthy or had other intentions. To see everything come together was surprising and yet I wanted more from his perspective to truly understand him.

There were scenes that I was not expecting, and new characters I was drawn to. Janella has created a world full of new and unique experiences. If I were ever to end up in such a world, it would be easy to fall for the illusions that can appear in the blink of an eye.

When Night Breaks is like looking through a kaleidoscope and trying to find the true image, searching through the mirrored image of what is actually reality while the illusions try and distract you from it. It’s full of mirrored worlds and shattered dreams.
