Singapore Eats: foodie for a week
I love food. Sometimes when I travel I don’t get hungry (perhaps because of stress and so much going on my body is overwhelmed) but I love going to new places and trying new foods regardless of how empty my stomach may be.
Singapore had many options, from convenience store finds, to food stalls, to expensive sandwiches that kept me from eating in actual restaurants the remainder of my trip.
My first day upon arriving I walked by Grids Coffee Bar and I loved the vibe. Cafe by day, Bar by night (which I never actually visited but I’m sure is still quite as lovely) their menu options made me want to try everything because it sounded so delicious. My first visit I was exhausted after traveling hours and walking around all morning and afternoon, so I ended up getting their lox sandwich and lavender latte, which was perfect for the rainy day I went in to escape from. Their decor and vibe was perfect and I ended up going again before I left to try one of their teas which I have to say was even better than the latte I think.
Next were the Hawker Centres
I went to four or five during my time in Singapore. Each one had many, but similar, options, and only took cash. Newton was perfect for night, but not if it rains, and Lau Pa Sat is good for rainy days, but felt very commercialized and was packed during lunch time with office workers so I didn’t stay there long. I ended up trying a variety of foods at the different food stalls during my stay since this is where I spent most of my meals (Who could argue against a $4 meal?) and carrot cake (whatever is actually in it because I’m still not quite clear on, but know it’s not the orange vegetable) is still my favorite. Chicken and rice, Satays, Butterfly bun, Curry Puff, Rose/Badunng drink, and Fish Noodles
One of the times I went to a food stall it was a mix of self-serve where you get all the vegetables and fixings and then bring it to the counter to pay and they cook it. I was a bit confused with everything going on so a lady had to help me and point the things out, so the meal wasn’t really a meal haha but I at least ended up with some form of food. Just not the one I originally planned to get (this was after everywhere else was sold out of what I was trying to get in the first place). And afterwards they had places where you put your finished trays on halal or non halal sections…which my first time I wasn’t sure where the stations were but walking around I eventually found where to place the trays haha.
Some other places I ended up visiting was also Whisking Bakes with their taro flavored treats. They have the first Taro Tiramisu in Singapore so I was eager to try a bite and it was not disappointing, and the purple color was beautiful. I also tried a durian cream puff (not my favorite but interesting), a rose latte, and ice kaulung. So many desserts haha but they were all pretty good with some I’d eat again, and others (like the durian puff) probably not
I’m not really a huge fan of convenience store foods, and think sometimes they’re overrated, but I had some unique finds. My favorites were the Stew Orange Cake, Osmanthus Oolong with Mango tea (which I LOVED), and Papaya milk which was way better than the corn milk I tried in Korea haha. (noting an orange theme here with the colors and tasty foods haha)
Which food in Singapore would you eat?
