Off the Plate: Dakgalbi

Dak-galbi (닭갈비) is a delicious spicy stir-fried chicken dish, and one of my favorite Korean foods. But what is even better is cheese dakgalbi as it melts and coats the who dish and ties all the flavors together. Though be warned trying to eat the melting cheese will possibly require scissors to eat so you don’t have a continuous string of cheese haha.

Since coming to South Korea this is one of my favorite dishes. The spicy meal is perfect for chicken lovers, and is served while it finishes cooking so it is steaming hot when you dig in. Along with deliciously seasoned meat, dakgalbi often includes glass noodles, cabbage, tteok (rice cake), sweet potatoes, and other veggies tossed in. Suffice to say it is amazing and a great social meal. I could eat it for any meal, and always enjoy the conversation when eating dakgalbi with friends. And if you are still hungry, you can get rice and have fried rice made with the leftover ingredients as well to eat all the remaining food and sauce *yum*

It’s a dish that can be made different ways, slightly different styles and ingredients, and enjoyable each time. I’ve attempted to make it once with a premade kit from a local market, and once from scratch, but that is for another story. (Still good but not the same so I need some practice haha 😉
