Bringing History to Life: Suncheon Open Film Set

If you’ve watched any historical dramas or movies set in Korea, chances are you’ve seen the Suncheon Drama Set as one of the filming locations. Over the years, numerous dramas with more every year, have been filmed there. Some of which include: Mal-Moe-E: The Secret Mission, Gangnam Blues, Oasis, Youth of May , and The Light in Your Eyes.

Upon entering, you are greeted by various roads, and depending on which one you wander through you will be transported to a different era of Korea spanning from the 1950s to the 1980s. You get to see a glimpse of how quickly the country has grown over a short period, which is quite fascinating.

As you continue up through the decades, you’ll come across shops like bookstores and even karaoke rooms that are available for visitors to enjoy. I saw many people trying their skills at the noraebang, a popular activity that many friend groups joy. The loud music resonated through the building and spilled out to the street, where loved ones were laughing at the simple pleasure it brought them in the old-style town.

Walking through the dirt streets you truly feel as if you’ve been transported back in time. It was heartwarming to see many Koreans, particularly from the older generation, relishing the nostalgic atmosphere. There was one group of women reminiscing about how their mothers and grandmothers would use the props in the village when they were young—working hard throughout the day. For the younger generation, it is a site only seen on tv screens through dramas, but for the older generation, it is a taste of their past and the memories they created during that time.

Throughout the village, you can find different shops to stop and grab a drink or bite to eat. From slushies for hot days, pajeon—a tasty Korean seafood pancake, and even beondegi—silkworm pupae– if you’re feeling super adventurous. I did not try the beondegi (anyone else not a fan of the crunchiness of bugs?) but I did watch my friends try it and not find it to their liking haha.

The Suncheon Drama Set offers visitors a captivating journey through time, transporting visitors to different eras of Korea. With its rich history as a filming location, this place holds a special allure for fans of historical narratives and films. As you explore the village, you’ll be immersed in the sights and sounds of a bygone era, witnessing the remarkable growth of the country over the decades. The atmosphere evokes a sense of nostalgia and serves as a bridge between generations. It’s a place where the younger generation can experience the past they’ve only heard of, while the older generation can relive and share cherished moments from their history.

The Suncheon Drama Set is truly a must-visit destination that brings Korea’s past to life and leaves visitors with a deeper appreciation for its cultural heritage.
